What Is Density?
Density is the mass of a substance per unit of volume. The most common unit is grams per milliliter (g/mL), though you’ll also see it expressed as kg/m³, lb/qt, or lb/gal.
density = mass ÷ volume
Water has a density of about 1 g/mL at room temperature. Honey clocks in at about 1.42 g/mL. Air is roughly 0.001225 g/mL at sea level.
Why Density Varies
Several factors can change the density of a substance:
- Temperature: Most liquids expand when heated, lowering their density. Water at 4°C is denser than water at 90°C.
- Compaction: Flour that’s been sifted takes up more space (lower density) than flour that’s been packed down.
- Moisture content: Wet soil is denser than dry soil.
- Composition: Different brands of cooking oil have slightly different densities based on their oil blend.
Using Density for Conversion
Once you know the density of your substance, converting between quarts and pounds is just multiplication:
pounds = quarts × density × 2.0864
(when density is in g/mL)
Or if your density is already in lb/qt:
pounds = quarts × density
Measuring Density at Home
If you need the exact density of something:
- Weigh an empty measuring cup
- Fill it with exactly 1 cup (236.6 mL) of your substance
- Weigh it again
- Subtract the cup weight
- Divide the substance weight (in grams) by 236.6
That gives you the density in g/mL.
